A Cars 2 birthday party

July 23, 2012 032

Our youngest son requested a Cars 2 birthday party for his 4th birthday.  My goal was to give him a Cars 2 party but to do it on a budget.  I think we have accomplished both of our wishes!

The Cake

I will start this with this little disclaimer:

I am not a cake decorator!  {smile} So please, please, please…know that this cake is not perfect.  I had other ideas for the cake but the heat in our house (air conditioner issues) made the icing melt and the cake was not what I exactly wanted.

However, my son loved it.  And that is what matters despite this so-not-a-cake-decorator mom’s perfectionist tendencies!

July 23, 2012 027 The cake was inspired by this Pinterest pin.  Visit that link to see the pretty version. {smile}

*Just a note.  The original idea for this cake was made out of cupcakes.  Our cake was made out of two 13x9 cakes cut and pieced together to make a number 4.

 The Decorations

A couple of balloons from Dollar Tree, some scrapbook paper & cardstock from Hobby Lobby, some dried beans and mason jars, and a table cloth bought with a 40% off coupon made some cute decorations for this Cars 2 party.  (The cars were from the birthday boy’s car collection.)

The flags are super easy to make with scrapbooking paper and cardstock.  Cut a few triangles of each color.  (Use one flag for a template.)  Punch holes in the corners and string up with yarn.  Easy and cute!

Flags on the table were added to small mason jars with alternating black and white beans to create a striped effect.  The flags are just leftover paper cut into triangles and taped to skewers.

Right before the party (when I didn’t have time to do it), I realized that a road on the table would help the centerpieces pop better.  I think it would be cute for the road to curve around the flags.  I just put a straight road under the centerpieces to see if it would look good.  I’m sure we’ll have another car party in the future so I’ll save the idea for then.

The decorations and cake cost us less than $25 by using what we had around the house and by using some bargain buys.  And our Littlest Man loved his party!  That’s a race won in my book!

Looks like a great party to me! Great job doing it all on a budget. I am often shocked when some of my friends confide what they spend on birthday parties for their munchkins. By the way, love the new blog title and look. So hip.

Debaixo do pé esquerdo escreva o nome dela.

    Repita 3X

  6. Thank you, Mariann. :) Next year is a friends and cousins party for Evan (the kids are taking turns on the big parties because we can't do big parties X 5 every year). I'm hoping he requests a race car/cars party since I'll all ready have the decorations! :D

  7. Thank you, Melissa. It is easy to spend a lot on their parties. For Abby's party earlier this year, I set a very strict budget and still went over. Evan's party was an immediate family/grandparents party so it was easy to keep that cheap. Had I added in snacks, goody bags, activities for a friend party, the price would have been higher. But I'm convinced that it can be kept on the cheaper side. I love the Like Merchant Ships blog. (She no longer blogs but her posts are still available.) She was so good at showing you how to entertain (and do it well) without spending a lot of money. I still go to her blog when I need inspiration to do just that. :)
